Beaver Valley Ski Club adds to their donation!

BEAVER VALLEY SKI CLUB HONOURED IN NEW HOSPITAL

This year’s Banked Slalom event at the Beaver Valley Ski Club welcomed over 400 riders and guests to the club to help bring the season to an end and to help the fundraising initiative of the Together In Care Campaign for the new Markdale Hospital.

The Club was excited to present this $19,000 donation to the Centre Grey Health Service Foundation, in support of the new Markdale Hospital. The Banked Slalom event, including prior years, has now raised over $50,000 in total for the Markdale Hospital.

As a result, they will have a Hospital Emergency room named in memory of Club snowboarder Jackie Primeau Snarr.  Jackie has been the inspiration behind the Banked Slalom since its inception.

“Huge thanks to the Beaver Valley Ski Club, the Banked Slalom Team and every sponsor and patron who came out for this event” stated Robert Bateman, Board member of Centre Grey Health Services Foundation.  “A community hospital is only possible with community support, and we are very grateful to the BVS for the support they continue to show to their hospital!” said Bateman.

Several structural elements of the new hospital are now complete including the framework and the base of the roof. The project remains on target to be complete mid-2023.

Dr. Hamilton Hall and Dr. Susan Grant Hall and family

We have owned property near Markdale since 1981.  Both Susan and I had medical practices in Toronto so it wasn’t until 1993 that we were able to move to Glenelg.  From the start the Markdale Hospital was a big part of our lives.  Shortly after we settled in, our three-year-old son Toby fell and broke his leg necessitating our first visit.  Once the fracture was set and immobilized, Toby quickly discovered how to walk unaided.  His stomping around on his cast led to frequent return visits to the hospital for new rolls of plaster to repair the damage.  We got to know the place very well.

A couple of years later my neighbor and I were splitting wood. He crushed his little finger and I took him to Markdale.  There was no surgeon available on site so rather than transport my neighbor to Owen Sound, I was given permission to use the Markdale operating room.

A few months later I received a polite letter from the administration at Grey Bruce Health Services suggesting that, since I was making regular use of the hospital system, perhaps I would like to join the hospital staff.  I did.

Forward to 2002 when I was asked to chair the first fund raising campaign for a new hospital: “Just a few weekends of your time”.  Thanks to amazing community support we collected pledges for twelve million dollars, an amount far more than the government anticipated.  And then we waited.  For 15 years.

During that time the hospital remained a significant part of our lives.  I continued to see patients there, was sick enough to spend a week as an in-patient, two broken arms – I had to drop my motorcycle and Toby fell out of a tree –and I joined the new Capital Campaign.  The Hall family has been deeply involved with the Markdale hospital for decades and supporting this up-to-date facility is one of our best decisions.

IN SUPPORT OF THE NEW MARKDALE HOSPITAL

The Board and Staff of the Dundalk District Credit Union showed their community support this week, as they pledged a total of $50,000. to the “Together In Care” campaign for the New Markdale Hospital.

When the campaign began many years ago to build a new hospital in Markdale, the Dundalk District Credit Union stepped forward with a significant contribution, and now that this long-awaited project is finally underway they stepped up again to provide additional and much needed financial support for the new hospital.

“All of us at the Dundalk District Credit Union live and work right here in the area served by Markdale Hospital and each one of us has been personally impacted in some way during the course of our lives by the benefits of local health care services and the excellent care provided here in our rural community. We understand the importance of having a new hospital right here in Markdale” stated Janice Mason, CEO of the Dundalk District Credit Union.

“We are very proud to be partnering with the Dundalk District Credit Union as we improve health care in our communities through this new hospital.  Their donation will have a positive impact on the lives of many for decades to come” stated Harvey Fraser, Chair of the “Together In Care” campaign, and Centre Grey Health Services Foundation.

Construction of the new Markdale Hospital is now 35% complete and running on schedule. Roofing is now underway. The 78,000 square foot facility is on target to open in mid 2023.
